May update

Here is the updated chart with May’s numbers (click to enlarge).

May chart

May

  • Goal: 25.5 miles
  • Actual: 32.5 miles (127%)

May was a much better month than April.  I still had my learning experiences, but I mostly had plenty of fun out on my feet.

Highlights of the month include:

  • Participating in the Cinco de Mayo Cuatro Miler with my wife, Dad and WSM, Cletus and his wife.  Not only did I PR at the four-mile distance (33:00), we all had a good time afterwards as well.  We’re looking to head back to do their Thanksgiving race in November.
  • My track workout on May 12th.  I know I said I wasn’t doing any more of these until my mileage was increased, but I couldn’t help myself.  I burned a couple of 200’s, and felt very fast.  It’s good to be reminded of that from time to time.
  • Running in the Race for the Cure on May 19th.  Trying to pace Cletus to a 30:00 5k, we got very close (I finished in 30:14).  We had a great time, but my time/pace would leave some unresolved issues in my head that didn’t get cleared up until this past Saturday (details coming soon).
  • Going out the next day for the longest run of my life, at 5.31 miles.  In immediate retrospect, this was a bad decision.  But I learned, and I’ve moved on.
  • Keeping seven of my thirteen runs this month to a 9:00/mile pace or slower.  I’m slowly becoming a believer in the lower paced training runs.  I feel like I’m too new to this running thing to be going out every other day and giving a medium/hard effort and pushing the pace.  I’ll still have days where I feel the need to burn a little speed (and yes, I know that seven and eight minute miles is not burning for everyone!), but I’m serious about working the Long Slow Distance methods.

June has already started off well, and I’m encouraged that it will continue as such.  Thanks for stopping by.  See you out there.
